When Is It Time To Redesign Your Website?

When Is It Time To Redesign Your WebsiteConsider your website as your store front. Your website is what customers will see first, so you want to make a good memorable and inviting first impression. Of course, this means you have to keep your website up to date. Potential customers will turn away if they find your site outdated, old or stale. One of the tricks here is capturing what some refer to as Zeitgeist, while not loosing sight of what your business has to offer. You also need to keep in mind that your website needs to keep up with  changes in technology and has to look good on all screen sizes  from computers, to tablets, to mobile phones.

Capturing Zeitgeist

Zeigeist is basically the defining spirit or mood of a particular period in time, in other words, what we thought of as great design in the 90’s or 2000’s now looks old and outdated. Technology,  including video and picture quality, is changing fast and if you want your website to be appealing, you need to keep up with these changes. But don’t forget, having and impressive website with great pictures and interesting video, won’t help your business much, if site visitors have a hard time trying to figure out what your business can do for them. Also, keep in mind that over time your  business focus may have changed. If that’s the case, make sure your website reflects that change accurately. Use your website to inform customers about what is going on with your business, talk about and show new products or services, and update and change content on your website to reflect the changes in your industry. They do not have to be huge changes, just a little be of dusting to keep things fresh and new. A website that has never been changes since the day it was made, will not only become less popular with potential clients, but it will also lose ranking on the search engines.

Changes In Technology

A website is designed with software. The website software needs to be regularly updated. The software designers are regularly creating patches that fix glitches in the software. They are also adapting and upgrading their software to improve the user experience and to protect it from hackers. A website does not automatically perform updates. The website administrator needs to do these updates on a regular basis which means at a minimum monthly. You can compare minor updates and patches to brushing and flossing your teeth everyday. The major updates are more like going to the dentist for cleaning, fixing a cavity or getting braces. You do not have to brush your teeth or even fix a cavity, but over time it may cause some major problems just like if you do not perform your website security updates.
